PUNE, April 16: In a major theft in a flat at Somwar Peth, cash and valuables amounting to Rs 2.35 lakh, were taken away by unidentified thieves on Thursday evening.

The flat belonged to Sanjaykumar Manikchand Chhajed, who owns a jewellery shop at Deccan Gymkhana. The theft took place around 5.30 pm when Chhajed had left the flat for his shop. The thieves removed the latch of the door and gained entry into the flat. They went in the bedroom and searched for valuables from three cupboards. A cash of Rs 93,000, besides 340 grams of gold, and a mobile phone valued at Rs 6000 were taken away by the thieves.

Sanjaykumar Chhajed and his brother Mangilal together stayed at the flat. Mangilal had left for Mumbai on Wednesday evening.

The Samarth police are investigating.

In another incident, a cash of Rs 66,000 was taken away by unidentified thieves from the JVB departmental stores in Narayan Peth last night. The thieves broke the locks and managed to enter the shop. The Vishrambaug police are investigating.

Murder bid:
A former corporator and member of the Progressive Education Society8217;s governing board Milind Ekbote has alleged that an attempt to murder him was made by a former canteen contractor of the Modern College, Jaya Shetty.

In a scuffle at the canteen yesterday, Shetty allegedly threw hot oil towards Ekbote which fell on the latter8217;s left hand. Ekbote has been admitted to the Sassoon hospital for treatment to his burn injuries, police said.

Shetty had earlier been allotted the contract to provide canteen facilities last year. The contract, however, was cancelled recently. Shetty allegedly tried to forcefully enter the canteen yesterday.
