A Meerut court on Saturday sentenced five people to death in a triple murder case which took place in Bani Sarai four years ago.
As soon as the sentence was announced, friends and sympathisers of the accused raised angry slogans and went on a rampage. Security forces had to be called in to control the situation. District Magistrate Niteshwar Kumar said stringent action would be taken against those found guilty of hooliganism.
The triple murder took place in June 2003, a result of a land dispute between members of an erstwhile zamindar family. Those killed included a Tihar jail doctor.
The dispute started over division of land in Ghaziabad district between the families of one Bashiruddin and Khalid. The latter was among the five sentenced on Saturday.
