Acting on its threat, the RSS today filed a defamation suit against HRD Minister Arjun Singh for suggesting the organisation’s involvement in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
The case, filed in the Haryana court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Jagadhri Atul Maria, by state RSS chief Darshan Lal Jain, also lists as respondents N. Ram, editor-in-chief and publisher of The Hindu, M/S Kasturi and Sons, publishers of the paper and Balachandran, its printer.
Hours after the RSS filed the suit, HRD Minister Arjun Singh said he would not apologise or backtrack from his statement. ‘‘There is no question of any apology from my side or going back. What is there in my written statement? I stand by it,’’ he told reporters. On the defamation suit, he said: ‘‘That (the written statement) will be responded to by my legal advisors.’’
On the criticism that he was engaged in a battle with his predecessor, Murli Manohar Joshi, Singh said: ‘‘I think that will be below my dignity.’’ The RSS had earlier served a legal notice on the minister and asked him to tender a written apology.
