
CHANDIGARH, Sept 26: The national symposium on quot;Contact Lens and Vision Correction Alternativesquot; concluded here today at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in which the doctors deliberated in detail on the use of contact lenses for correction of vision disorders.
As many as 30 experts spoke on various aspects of contact lenses, lending an insight into the usage, limitations, advantages and precautions concerned. The scope of correcting disorders among children was discussed by Dr Murli from Hyderabad who spoke on the care needed for such babies and children.
Dr E. Vaithilingam from Madras, while discussing the usage of cosmetic contact lenses emphasised on the extreme care required for handling such lenses. quot;Normally youngsters wear contact lenses to look better. But one thing that must be ensured is that the lenses should never be shared. Users have a tendency to share lenses of different colours. and change them everyday.quot;
Talking about the colured lenses, Dr Vaithilingam said since the cosmetic lenses have a coloured dye in it, extra care should be taken since the dye can leak out and damage the eye. quot;Also, contact lenses should never be washed with tap water, but with the solution meant specifically for that purpose,quot; he added.
Dr R.S.Gill from Patiala spoke about special lenses making an appearance in the Indian market meant for the patients who need correction of cylindrical error. quot;Toric lenses, as these are called, need extra special care for fitting them into the eye. For this some expertise and training is required since the lens should be fitted in a manner that the area of cylindirical error is exactly over it,quot; he said.
Among other prominent speakers Dr Ashish Bansal from Hyderabad spoke on the alternative of laser system for correction of refractive disorder, its results and the procedure involved and its limitations.
A hands on workshop, which was attended by 200 delegates on the procedures involved in fitting of contact lenses and the various kinds of lenses, was conducted in the morning by Dr J.S.Saini, Dr Bhatia and Dr G.P. Singh.
