8226; In her column, 8216;8216;Breeding grounds for suicide bombers8217;8217;, Tavleeen Singh has hit the nail on the head by observing that no Western leaders or our own 8216;8216;secular8217;8217; lot have shown any determination when it comes to dealing with the mullahs and the exclusivist ideology they preach in their Islamic seminaries. We must recognise that Islamic terrorism poses worldwide threat. When it comes to dealing with the Muslim underworld or Muslim criminals, some political parties demur in taking action, feeling that it will have an adverse bearing on their Muslim vote bank. So, illegal Bangladeshi immigrants continue to live in this country because they are a vote bank. As long as our leader continue to pursue such narrow personal gains, it will be difficult to win the war against terror.

Unfortunately, sports is neglected in out country, with the governments only stepping forward to congratulate sportspersons when they achieve global recognition. But nothing is done to actually nurture talent, or promote sports. In contrast, sports plays an integral role in the West, even affecting its economy. For instance, football, tennis and golf are major tourist earners in Europe, while in the US, it is basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis and golf. We don8217;t have a single annual tournament that meets international standards. Compare this with the UK which has the Wimbledon, Silverstone Grand Prix, British Open Golf. Similarly, US, Australia, Canada, France and Germany also have major annual tournaments which are considered the ultimate in their respective sports.

China has stolen a march over India in terms of hosting major international sports meets such as the season-ending ATP in Shanghai and now the Grand Prix. As for our sports federations and associations, they are manned by politicians who have been holding on to their posts for decades while not contributing anything by way of sports. It is time for the government to realise that sports plays a major role in developing economies of the world.
