8226; N K Singh8217;s column is aptly called 8216;8216;From the Ringside8217;8217;. While he seems to have solutions for all our social, political and economic problems, he delivers mere lip service, truly a ringside viewer. Why doesn8217;t he jump into the ring and take some positive action instead.
Changing the subject, the report, 8216;8216;Guardians of the camel may hold key to diabetes8217;8217;, is only partly true. While camel milk does contain some health-promoting properties, that does not mean it is a sure remedy for diabetes. The nomadic camel-rearing tribes could have special genes which resist diabetes. The most important factor is their lifestyle. These nomads are always on the move, and thus get adequate exercise. No nomad is overweight or obese. And studies have proved that one important factor which can regulate sugar levels is regular exercise.

8226; With reference to N K Singh8217;s column, 8216;8216;Bihar may get a government but what about governance?8217;8217; anything would be better than Laloo8217;s reign. The people of Bihar can now look forward to improving their living standards. Bihar may even be able to overcome its stigma of being the most backward State. The law and order situation will improve and kidnappings may soon be a thing of the past. The new government, whenever it is formed, must take steps to correct all the wrongs during Laloo-Rabri8217;s rule, and put Bihar on the road to development.

8226; This is not the first time that Tavleen Singh, 8216;8216;Living it up on the fringes8217;8217;, has drawn attention to the undue perks and benefits enjoyed by our politicians. But the Union Finance Minister has refused to note these perks, even as he is ready to tax the fringe benefits of professionals and employees.
If the rest are to be taxed on the perks that go with their jobs, why should our ministers, including P Chidambaram himself, be spared? Why shouldn8217;t they have to pay tax on their free telephone connections, transport, security, medical and residential facilities?

8226; In the eyes of the law, all citizens are equal. Those who preach must put it in practice first. According to a TV channel, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram lives in a palatial bungalow, the monthly rental value for which is Rs 1.5 lakhs. He should be taxed on this fringe benefit and others, along with all other ministers and bureaucrats.

8226; The 8216;8216;Fringe Benefit Tax8217;8217; should only be made applicable for those employees who are in the higher tax bracket, say those who have a taxable salary, as per the present rules, of Rs 6,00,000. But it should be made applicable to all employees, irrespective of whether they are in the private or public sector.

8226; Tavleen Singh8217;s opposition to the Fringe Benefit Tax, on the argument that ministers are not taxed on their perks, is not based on any rationale. It smacks of an anti-UPA bias. On the one hand, we blame the government for not finding ways of increasing revenue. On the other hand, we attack the same government for a new tax initiative. There cannot any disagreement about the need to bring to book all the benefits enjoyed by ministers and bureaucrats. But that is a separate issue altogether, which need not be linked with the Fringe Benefit Tax.

8226; With reference to Coomi Kapoor8217;s column, 8216;8216;Inside Track8217;8217;, both the Prime Minister and the Congress president should realise that it is difficult for honest politicians to survive in today8217;s dirty politics. They should cleanse the whole system. As a first step, chief ministers should be elected by secret vote. Anyone who wins the support of one-third MLAs should be declared the CM, within three days of the poll results. As for MLAs who abstain, they should not be allowed to participate in the House proceedings.
