8226; With reference to Shekhar Gupta8217;s column, 8216;8216;Seven reforms the Left cannot complain about8217;8217;, I want to add two more reforms:

8226; Disinvest loss-making public sector enterprises by selling them to their employees. The Left can hardly complain if union members end up owning their company. Over time, some employees will sell their shares, creating a publicly-listed company, i.e., de facto privatisation.

8226; Implement FDI policies similar to China8217;s. How can the Left protest if we copy China8217;s Communist Party?
Prof Arun Khanna

8226; Some suggestions for the proposed reforms:

8226; The increase in education cess should spare the poor and middle-class. Instead of opening new schools, the existing ones should be improved.

8226; Instead of splitting HRD Ministry, a national high-powered autonomous commission 8212; comprising vice-chancellors, eminent professors, scholars, writers, engineers and other experts 8212; should be entrusted with the task of revamping our universities, colleges and technical institutions. Education must not be entrusted to politicians.

8226; Tourism is an ever growing industry. We need to streamline the department, dividing it into separate units, like hotels, transport etc. This too is not a turf for politicians. We need a proper tourism commission.

8226; Railways should be split into i Freight/ goods trains which should remain with the government; ii Passenger trains which should be privatised, on the basis of the highest bidder for each route.

8226; While the UPA government, with financial wizards at the helm of its affairs, tries to build our economy, the Leftists shoot down every proposal. This even as its government in Bengal woos FDIs and actively endorses globalisation and private enterprise. The Left must end this hypocrisy, and agree on a Common Minimum Reform.
Cletus Dias

8226; I would like to add one more reform: Expand the Konkan Railways8217; proposed Roll-On and Roll-Off RO-RO service to the rest of India. The benefits are obvious.

8226; The Total Factor Productivity TFP will improve.

8226; Road freight transportation will be limited to last mile.

8226; This would reduce corruption 8212; under various cesses like octroi, excise, security 8212; at inter-State borders.

8226; It will economically integrate India into a single unit as transportation cost barriers will be eliminated.
Raj Subramaniam

8226; In 1990, Paul Samuelson told me that in the US, human capital depreciated very fast. I came back and wrote that in India it was the opposite and listed all the old individuals who were still hanging in there. By the way, where economic policy is concerned, why does the Express sound like a cheerleader for the UPA Government in general, and the Finance Ministry in particular?

8226; I don8217;t doubt the Left8217;s patriotism. However, their views are based on an outdated ideology which has failed. Here are two reform measures the Left shouldn8217;t object to: i Disinvest PSUs to finance the social sector; ii Labour reforms in the unorganised sector.
Pranav Sachdeva

8226; Two major reforms the Left and majority of the Indians would love to see:

8226; Levy property taxes about 3 on real-estate properties and agricultural land for families with a net worth above a certain limit.

8226; Subject the bureaucracy to a new law on accountability based on the principle of administration.
Sankarshan Acharya

8226; It was sad to read the report, 8216;8216;Goodbye Mr Stripes8217;8217;. It is high time the government stopped turning a blind eye to the issue. How can one expect a 50-year-old guard with a meagre salary to safeguard our tigers. Compounding the problem is the improper distribution of funds. If we want to do away with wildlife crime and preserve tigers, we need to induct younger and more enthusiastic staff. And there is no harm in privatising Project Tiger.
Bal Govind

8226; This is with reference to Tavleen Singh8217;s column, 8216;8216;Between India and 21st century, a deep Valley8217;8217;. There was a time when nobody would have thought that East Germany and West Germany would be unified. So maybe we will see a day when Indians and Pakistanis can mingle freely. But since politicians can8217;t and won8217;t let this happen, let the common people be the protagonists.
