
Party supporters beat up murder accused in police custody
Four unidentified youths gunned down Anant Srivastava, former Congress councillor of Rishra municipality, near Hastings Jute Mill in Hooghly on Monday night.
Following the incident, his party had called a 24-hour bandh in Rishra on Tuesday. During the bandh, angry Congress supporters pulled out the murder accused from a police van and thrashed them while they were being taken to the Serampore Walsh Hospital for a medical check-up. The incidents took place near the Rishra police station. The mob also torched the police vehicle.
A senior district police officer said that no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to the police, Srivastava, a labour officer of the Hastings Jute Mill, was inside the Congress office near the mill when four unidentified youths stormed the office and fired at him around 7 pm, killing him instantly.
One of his party colleagues was also seriously injured after the assailants threw bombs at the office.
Srtivastava was rushed to the Serampore Walsh Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
As the news of the Congress leader8217;s murder spread to neighbouring areas, several Congress supporters staged a demonstration in the area demanding immediate arrests of the guilty.
They said Srivastava had to pay with his life for protesting against growing criminal activities in the area. A large number of police personnel were deployed in the area and a hunt was launched to nab the culprits.
Later, the police arrested Krishna Chakraborty, who had an old rivalry with Srivastava, and another man in connection with the murder.
