William Shakespeare8217;s Taming Of The Shrew is being staged again, this time by the Hima Devi Kendra. Hima Devi, the director, feels that this old tale will mirror the concerns of many modern fathers. quot;The anxiety of Baptista, the father, Catherina the shrew and Bianca, is on the lines of a typical rich Indian businessman. And Catherina realises that she just has to manipulate men to get her way. And isn8217;t manipulate the keyword of the lives of most Indian women?quot; she asks.

Inner self
Rini Velamur draws her inspiration from her travels. An artist, she has lived in the jungles of Sikkim and travelled through the deserts of Rajasthan. Based in Baroda now, she spends most of her time painting. Says Antonio E Costa, a Canadian painter, quot;Her work has an immediate sense tied to inner realisation8230; her paintings have a directness that holds our collective attention.quot; Velamur8217;s worksare part of various private collections in Honk Kong, Australia and the Middle East besides being a part of corporate and private collections in India. Her works are priced approximately between Rs 2,500 to Rs 7,000.

The gurukul way
THE Shaktiyogashram gurukulam, a mini-university near Pune, has organised a five-day gurukulam residential camp in the following disciplines: Indian classical dance, Indian classical music, yoga and architecture. The classical dance section will concentrate on abhinaya besides Manipuri and Mohini Attam. The classical music workshop will offer insights on the Dhrupad style and voice culture. For the layman, a general camp has also been organised. The fees for the camp are Rs 1,000 excluding transport. GERD Rohling, an artist in residence at the Max Mueller Bhavan , is fascinated by the city. In his show Alles Und Nichts All And Nothing, he presents objects conceived and created out of raw material8217; procured, largely, from the city. The artist will also show his other works, titled Blue Blood, simultaneously at a different venue.

Folk song
Arpana Caur needs no introduction. A widely-exhibited artist 8212; both in India and abroad 8212; she comes back to Mumbai after four years with an exhibition titled Bridging Dualities8217;. A collaborative effort with Sat Narayan Pande, a Godna artist, Arpana retains the strong figurative trend that distinguishes her canvas. Says Suneet Chopra, quot;Arpana reminds us that the global art cannot be other than thatinfluenced by the populations that constitute the majority.quot; In this showing her folk motifs speak of poverty but also of a culture that comprehends the world outside.
