For the first time in his career, veteran painter Madhav Satwalekar is having an exhibition of water colours. Satwalekar is well known for his oils, including commissioned portraits and landscapes of Africa and Rajasthan. For his latest exhibition he has chosen architectural views of Rajasthan with colourfully dressed women, little lambs straying in the village and lively groups of rustic villagers.
Says art critic Dnyaneshwar Nadkarni, quot;Satwalekar8217;s brush ranges over the fields, villages and ancient structures of Rajasthan. He opens up a world imbued with lyrical beauty and profound humanity.quot; The 45 water colour works on display are priced in the range of Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 while four oil paintings are priced at Rs 60,000 each.

Life begins at 40. Or at least that8217;s what Hats Off Productions8217; new Gujarati comedy Ek Beejane Gamta Rahiye8230; seems to suggest. Written and directed by Aatish Kapadia, it tells the story of two middle-aged friends, Lavanya Mehta Sarita Joshi and Rajnikant Bhayani Deven Bhojani.
One a divorcee, the other a widower. Their platonic friendship blossoms into a bond despite disapproval and they stress the need for companionship at an age where people may begin to feel unwanted. quot; This idea is completely removed from the Indian sensibility. We thought of this subject while in the US and decided to explore a relationship that is unheard of in our society, yet identifiable for our audiences, quot; says producer Jamnadas Majethia.

Most of his works, priced between Rs 3,000 and Rs 25,000 are acrylic on canvas, with some done in acrylic and collage on paper. His exhibition is titled Rethinking Thinking and he says he enjoys the process of rediscovering his works through the perceptions of his friends. quot;I paint with a particular idea in mind and yet when my artist friends see my work, I am often surprised with the associations they perceive and express. A painting is a key to your imagination, quot; says Karne.
