
AMRITSAR, Dec 25: Minister for Labour, Employment and Local Self Government Balramji Das Tandon has settled the dispute between the management and workers of the local Essma Woollen Mill, GT Road and its branch at Ram Tirath Road.
According to Tandon, there was a lock-out in the mill after a dispute between the management and workers on May 15, 1998. After the lifting of the lock-out, many workers refused to join duty. Such workers were dismissed on October 15, 8217;98 after carrying out of inquiries. As a result the mill had not been working since the last seven months.
The minister added that he held a meeting with representatives of workers and its management here last evening. Suresh Mehra and Pardip Kumar Saini participated from the management8217;s side and Harbhajan Singh, Dara Singh, Murlidhar, Rattan Singh, Dinesh Kumar, Gurmukh Singh and Inder Singh Kaka represented the workers at the meeting.
According to the settlement, the dismissed8217; workers will get compensation for the period of the break 8212; gratuity, bonus, leave benefits and Rs 4000 as ex-gratia grant. The management will ensure re-employment of such workers within a week so that the mill starts functioning. However, the workers will have to hand over the possession of their quarters before getting these facilities.
More than 400 workers had been working in the mill. Various industrialists and labour organisations have welcomed the settlement.
