
Ahmednagar, Dec 5: Bhanudas Shira Chavan, one of the four prisoners, who had escaped from the prison at Karjat was re-arrested recently by the police after laying a trap near the Binawadi village in Solapur district.
Chavan and three other hardened criminals who were arrested in connection with a series of dacoities committed at petrol pumps in Maharashtra and Karnataka, had escaped from the Karjat prison on November 24. These prisoners had managed to escape by cutting the bars of their prison cells. Their escape from the prison, first such an incident in Ahmednagar district, had caused a sensation in the district.
After their escape, Ahmednagar Police superintendent Himanshu Roy and rural deputy police superintendent Kisan Pawar had appointed four squads in Ahmednagar and Karjat to nab the escapees. Photographs and other details of these prisoners were also dispatched to various police stations in Solapur as well as the nearby police stations in Karnataka state. The police had learnt that Chavan had arrived in areas around Akluj. Thereafter, a police team led by Akulj8217;s assistant police inspector P R Shah had laid a trap at Binawadi. Chavan who was hiding at an unapproachable site was nabbed at the end of a chase which covered a distance of two kilometres.
