Escaped from quake, caught in Kolkata

Notorious extortionist and supari killer Manojia, alias Manoj Singh alias Major Rai 35, was arrested late Thursday night from Girish Park area.

Notorious extortionist and supari killer Manojia, alias Manoj Singh alias Major Rai 35, was arrested late Thursday night from Girish Park area.

A resident of central Kolkata8217;s Cotton Street, he used to run an intra-state gang of criminals. He and several other inmates had escaped Bhuj central jail of Gujarat, when an earthquake struck the state on January 26, 2000.

Following information that Manojia was extorting from businessmen in the area, officials of Girish Park police station arrested him, said Deputy Commissioner Detective Department Gyanwant Singh. He was produced at the court on Friday and remanded in police custody.

Manojia, who created terror in the Barabazar, Posta, Jorasanko and Jorabagan areas since early 8216;90s as an associate of notorious extortionists like Gabbar and Manoj Tiwari both are in jail, had fled to Bhuj along with UP-based mafia Manjeet Mange in 1999.
