South Africa’s AB de Villiers and Paul Harris shared in a belligerent 95-run stand Sunday to set England a target of 197 for victory in the fourth Test at The Oval. England faced just eight balls and were yet to open their scoring when rain washed out any further play on Day Four. The hosts have 10 second-innings wickets in hand and a full day’s play Monday to record their first win of the four match series. South Africa has already secured an unassailable 2-0 lead.

South Africa were dismissed for 318 after tea with De Villiers top-scoring with 97 and Hashim Amla making 76. England seamer Stuart Broad, who took two of the three wickets to fall in the evening session, ended with 3-44.

The visitors had plunged to 218-7, when Harris joined De Villiers. While Harris endured a barrage of short-pitched bowling, De Villiers took the attack to the England bowlers. He hit Flintoff for successive fours — bringing up his 14th Test 50 — and then hammered Panesar twice through midwicket before the new ball was taken.

Brief scores: South Africa 194 & 318 (AB de Villiers 97, H Amla 76; S Broad 3/44, M Panesar 2/37, Harmison 2/84, J Anderson 2/85) vs England 316 & 0 for 0
