The residents, who were hoping that October will bring relief from power cuts as the paddy season is over, got a rude shock today, when the Punjab State Electricity Board PSEB re-imposed four to six-hour power cuts in the state.

The reason being given for load-shedding is that the power purchase agreements expired on September 30, and the board had no choice but to impose cuts to fill the gap between demand and supply.

PSEB Member Distribution HS Brar, while talking to The Indian Express, said, 8220;We had not expected a sudden change in the weather. Once again the AC load has increased, leading to an additional 250-MW burden. We had to re-impose power cuts, which had ended in September-mid.8221;

While Ludhiana is facing cuts for about six hours, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Patiala remain in dark for about four hours.

Rural areas too are suffering cuts in the range of six and seven hours from today onwards. Due to snow in the hills, hydel supply has also been reduced from existing 350 lakh units to 285 lakh units. However, the industry is not facing weekly off.

PSEB authorities said they were purchasing about 500 LUs of power from outside from today as against 800 LUs till yesterday. The authorities have not hinted at relief till the time the temperature dips.
