VADODARA, June 16: Within a fortnight of highway authorities arresting one person for dumping effluents along the highway near Chhani, another incident of errant industrialists disposing of chemical wastes came to light last night. Two employees of the NH authority sustained minor acid burns when they challenged the miscreants near Vernama village on NH 8.
An official of the NH authority said that the two officials on night patrol came upon a tanker GJ-6-B-475 carrying effluents, which was followed by a Tata Sumo GJ-6-JJ-6656 with six people. When they challenged their presence, the men travelling in the Sumo threw acid on them.
Though the tanker number had been determined to be fake, the owner of the Sumo had been identified and his name turned over to the police, the official said, adding that since an FIR had been lodged, the matter was now in the hands of the police. However, he admitted that the police were yet to take any satisfactory action in the Chhani dumping case.
When contacted, District Superintendent of Police Shamsher Singh said a case had been registered under Sections 336 and 114 for causing damage to public property and was being investigated.
Policemen all over the district had been alerted about tankers passing along the highways at night, he added.
