With observers detecting fake photo-identity cards and school-leaving age certificates, the Election Commission today came down hard on district-level poll officials in West Bengal, asking them to strictly adhere to guidelines while preparing electoral rolls.

The Election Commission warned poll officials that disciplinary action would be taken against those neglecting duties or not performing.

With speculation rife that the West Bengal polls may be deferred beyond May 15, 19 observers sent to the state submitted their reports to Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon and Election Commissioner Navin Chawla at a meeting today.

After the meeting, the Election Commission directed district electoral officers to prioritise deletion of names of all voters who have died or have moved residence. West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Debasis Sen and District Election Officers have been asked to submit compliance reports by January 31.
