MUMBAI, SEPT 6: The State Election Commission and the Nationalist Congress Party today made contradictory statements about election malpractice in Renapur Assembly constituency in particular and Beed Lok Sabha constituency in general.

While the NCP demanded that repoll should be held in at least eight centres in Renapur Assembly constituency in Marathwada where polling was held yesterday, State Chief Electoral Officer Dr D K Sankaran maintained that polling in Renapur was extremely peaceful and there was no need for a repoll.

Supporters of Deputy CM Gopinath Munde, the BJP nominee in Renapur, had indulged in snatching of ballot papers and other poll malpractices, NCP state unit spokesman Gurunath Kulkarni told mediapersons here. NCP nominee in Renapur, T P Munde, had written to Sankaran about Munde himself threatening his Munde8217;s polling agents, Kulkarni said.

On the other hand, while addressing a press conference at Mantralaya this evening, Sankaran refuted the possibility of election malpractises having taken place anywhere in the State. There was absolutely no problem whatsoever either in Renapur or in Beed. No ballot papers or boxes were snatched. There were complaints about polling agents being forcefully removed from 10 polling stations. On my directions, Beed district collector personally visited the area and conducted an inquiry. The allegations are baseless. I have not received any demand to conduct repolling in Renapur constituency,8217; said Sankaran.
