
SEPTEMBER 10: Defending champions Dimbula Athletic and Cricket Club and strong contenders Armenians gave ample notice of their prowess, though against hapless opponents, to notch up big victories on the second day of the Famous Grouse all-India and South Asia rugby tournament at the Bombay Gymkhana.
While the Armenians hardly raised a sweat in their 55-0 victory over school side Cathedral and John Conon, holders Dimbula from Sri Lanka simple packed too many guns for Cockies, the second string side of hosts Bombay Gymkhana. Dimbula prevailed 57-0.
In the other match of the day, Calcutta Police, leading 22-0 at half-time against South India, loosened up a bit to allow their opponents score two tries for a 27-10 victory. According to their captain, Verghese Kunjachan, 8220;We did not want to risk injury and hence took it easy in the second-half.8221; Calcutta Police take on their citymates Calcutta Cricket and Football Club in their second-round match and wanted to be at their best then.

For Calcutta Police, Amitava Rakshit emerged the hero, with a try and three conversions. They were always in control, thanks to efforts from Srinivas Sardar, Avigyan Mukherjee and Sushanta Saha.
Dimbula, here without five of their last year8217;s winning side, met with hardly any opposition from the Cockies and it was Nalin Wijetha, their young full-back who made the most of the situation, with three tries and once each by Ajit Pires, Nishanta Jayasuriya, Chanaka Jayasekara and Parakum Fernando. According to their manager, Saman Munasinghe, they are used to these conditions and are looking forward to extend their reign over the Famous Grouse Trophy.
