Actor Sanjay Dutt has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking regular bail against his conviction in the Mumbai serial blasts case. Earlier on August 20, Dutt was granted interim bail by the SC on the condition that he would surrender after receiving the copy of the judgment, which was given to him on October 22. He is now lodged in Pune’s Yerawada Jail.
In his petition, Dutt has submitted that since the appeal filed by him against the conviction would take time as the judgment of the TADA court was spread over 10,000 pages, he should be released on bail during pendency of the appeal. He has also said that he has a very good chance of acquittal in the case and he is ready to abide by any conditions imposed by the Court.
Dutt has made a substantive appeal against his conviction pointing out various procedural irregularities by the designated court and the police. He has also challenged the conviction under the Arms Act saying that no arms or ammunition had been recovered from him or from his residence, which is a necessary condition for its applicability.
