The Congress in Madhya Pradesh on Monday requested the Election Commission of India to cancel the registration of the BJP, claiming that the donation that the latter had received from Dow Chemical was illegal.
Leader of the Opposition Jamuna Devi told mediapersons that by accepting the donation from a foreign company, the BJP had violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act of 1976.
Dow Chemical has acquired Union Carbide, the US-based company responsible for the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984. Devi said the Section 4 1 e of the Act mentions that any political party, registered with the ECI, cannot accept donations from a foreign company.
The party claimed that any political organisation couldn8217;t accept foreign donations without permission from the Indian Government.
Submitting newspaper clippings about the 2500 donation received by the party in 2006-07 along with its formal complaint, the Congress asked the Election Commission to initiate an inquiry and cancel the BJP8217;s symbol and registration.
An RTI applicant had found out in April that the BJP and Congress had taken donation from various organisations, including Dow Chemical.
