Domestic servants get life imprisonment

Investigations by the Dadar police revealed that Kailash Giri was employed as a cook some few months before the incident. He later brought along Purshottam 14 from Orissa to work as a domestic servant in the household. On May 3, after Wagh8217;s wife Usha, a cardioanasthesist attached to various city hospitals, left for work, Purushottam along with Kailash, Damodar Sahu and Sridhar Sahu allegedly strangulated and smothered Dr Wagh and escaped with ornaments and cash worth Rs 1.26 lakh to Calcutta. The accused were arrested from their native place Hare Krishnapur in Orissa within three days of the incident.

While Kailash, Damodar and Sridhar was tried by the sessions court, Purshottam was tried and discharged by the juvenile court and handed over to his parents in 1996 after he pleaded guilty. Disturbed by the court verdict, Usha Wagh committed suicide soon after.

Kailash and Damodar were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 each for murder, three years RI under section 449 house trespass in order to commit offence punishable with death and 450 house trespass in order to commit offence punishable with life, five years RI under section 394 voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery and seven years RI under section 397 robbery or dacoity with an attempt to cause death or grievious hurt. All the charges will run concurrently. Sridhar Sahu was acquitted due to lack of adequate evidence.
