
Ending weeks of suspense over whether she will finally make the cut for the all-important Olympics this year, Bengal archer Dola Banerjee today exorcised the ghosts of poor form and booked her berth for the Beijing Games. At the end of four days of trials at the Sports Authority of India8217;s Kolkata centre, 17-year-old Pranitha stood first with a four-day total of 5167 out of a possible 5760 points. Dola was second with 5141 points.
Baranagar-born Dola was facing an uphill task for Olympic qualification after her form took a nose-dive in recent months. But she rose to the occasion at the Olympics trials held in Kolkata, and eventually fared well enough to book her ticket to Beijing.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Dola said she was relieved with her performance in the backdrop of criticism and poor form. 8220;This has come as a huge relief for me. My form wasn8217;t good enough, and I was looking for confidence,8221; an excited Dola said.
Dola8217;s qualification for the Olympics also clears the confusion surrounding her role in the Games, as she now gets to take part in both the individual and team events.
Railway8217;s Dola apart, junior archer V Pranitha of Steel Plant also made the Olympic Games cut and will join L Bombayla Devi of Railways in the Indian women8217;s recurve archery team for the Beijing Games.
