AICC leader Veerappa Moily could not answer as to what happened to the directive he had given to the state’s Congress ministers to declare their assets during his visit to the state in October last year. “Yes, I did ask the ministers to submit details of their assets to the CM. But there is no statutory provision under the law in Assam that makes it mandatory for ministers to declare their assets as exists in several other states,” Moily said.
He said that Union ministers do submit their assets on an annual basis to the Prime Minister. “I think the ministers in Assam should also do so,” he said, refusing to say that it could be made mandatory. While last year’s directive to ministers in Assam went unheeded, it was only this month that state education minister Ripun Bora was arrested while trying to offer a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to a CBI officer in New Delhi.
