The Karnataka politician was among the favourites of the party high command till the nth hour—when DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi expressed helplessness at supporting him, given the tension between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the sharing of the Kaveri waters. The one to gain was Jayanthi Natarajan, who has landed a Congress nomination.
