The Indian Cricket League ICL should have been a natural choice for someone like Punjab8217;s Pankaj Dharmani. The 33-year-old played his only one-day international in 1996 against South Africa in Jaipur. And the wicketkeeper batsman is not even in contention for a comeback to the national team. So he was on the Essel Group promoted ICL8217;s radar and was offered a lucrative deal.
But his commitment to Punjab cricket was stronger than the lure of money.
8220;Yes, I got an offer from ICL. It was tempting too. But I thought over it, discussed with my seniors, my family members and also Punjab Cricket Association officials and decided against it,8221; he said over phone.
So what made the veteran of 119 first-class matches decline the offer? 8220;See, money is not everything. Whatever I am today, it is because of Punjab. I owe my success to the land. It has given me so much. So it is my responsibility to give it back to Punjab. I am emotionally attached to it and I am committed to it. Now one of my goals is to take Punjab to the top of domestic cricket,8221; said Dharmani, who has scored 7864 first-class runs at an average of 52.42.
But was it tough to give up on a chance to make good money?
8220;Well, frankly it was tough as the offer was good. But I thought over it seriously, and only then declined it. I had enough time to take my decision. And as far as money is concerned, I don8217;t think there will be much difference between ICL and the BCCI in the coming years,8221; said Dharmani.
