In a sudden twist in the weather, incessant rainfall lashed the state on Friday.

While Lucknow received the maximum rainfall, Varanasi recorded the lowest see box. Central and eastern UP are the worst-affected regions. According to the weatherman, there will be no respite in the rainfall for the next 24 hours as well.

Four people died, two of them in Lucknow, three were injured in separate incidents. The strong winds and uprooted trees damaged power lines in many areas, disrupting electricity supply in most of the city.

A power sub-station was partly submerged in Mahanagar, while in Indira Nagar, the Lakman Puri feeder failed. According to LESA chief engineer KB Ram, the faults could not be repaired due to continuous rain. Power failures were reported from several parts of Allahabad, as even underground cables suffered severe damage.

Deaths were reported from Lucknow and Gorakhpur, where strong winds were accompanied by heavy rainfall. In Lucknow, one person died when a house collapsed at Jai Narain Road. One person was reportedly electrocuted near Loreto School. Another was injured when a wall of a house collapsed in Nakkhas area. The injured has been sent to the Trauma Centre at KGMU. In Gorakhpur, two persons were injured when strong winds overturned a tempo in Chauri Chaura. One Irawati Devi 46 died in Pipraich when the roof of her house collapsed.

According to the Met department director, L C Ram, the rainfall can be attributed to a depression, which after passing over Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, has come to rest over UP. More rains are expected in the next 24 hours.
