CHANDIGARH, Aug 24: It is not mandatory to deposit the firearms in the police stations but nobody will be allowed to carry arms in public.
UT Senior Superintendent of Police, when contacted, said that there will be prohibitory orders on carrying of arms there is no compulsion to deposit them in the police stations. He, however, added that all previous convicts would be required to deposit the weapons.
District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner M. Ramsekhar had passed the orders to this effect recently in the wake of coming elections. However, there was confusion if it was mandatory to deposit the arms in the thanas. Residents had expressed objection to this as they wondered if their costly weapons would be safe and well-maintained in the police stations. A police official said that the depositing of weapons was not being made mandatory as it was difficult to keep their custody and also maintain them.
