2-day summit to commemorate Disability Day
Around 400 disabled persons from across the country will be congregating in the Capital on December 2 for a two-day summit to mark Disability Day. The meeting is being organised by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People.

Issues like education, accessibility, employment, women and disability, political participation, sports and recreation will be discussed.

Many of the delegates have come through various NGOs across the country, while others were on the mailing list of the organisers. The most interesting responses were those who came to know of the summit through word of mouth.

Sudhakar Reddy from Hyderabad, who was on the mailing list of the Centre, spoke about the summit to around 25 disabled people he knew. Out of these, eight have confirmed their participation.

Similarly in Kashmir, the father of a disabled boy spread the word about the summit and he is expected to be in the Capital with six disabled persons.

NGOs like Spastics Society of Eastern India, Spastics Society of Karnataka, Kutch Vikas Trust are sending participants from various parts of the country, including Kalahandi in Orissa and Bhuj in Gujarat.

According to Dr M.R.Rajasekar, who was part of the team of surgeons that performed the transplant, the liver transplanted to Bhushan was one of three that were available with the hospital at the time. The donation was made by relatives of a brain dead patient to the organ donor card launched by the hospital in October. 8220;We could not find recipients for the other two organs and they were wasted, as a liver has to be transplanted within ten hours of removal,8221; the surgeon said.

8220;Bharat Bhushan Anand was fortunate that the organ was readily available when he needed it urgently,8221; Rajasekar observed. He added that two liver transplants were conducted earlier at Apollo. One involved a child and the other an adult who received the organ from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The adult did not survive long, he said.
