Deputy Superintendent of Police P R Thakur, posted in Dantewara district of Chhattisgarh, committed suicide by hanging on Friday evening.

Police sources said Thakur was suffering from depression for past some days and had been to the district hospital on Thursday to seek treatment.

However, SP Dantewara Rahul Sharma said the officer was a little tensed, which might have forced him to commit suicide. 8220;We have informed the family at Dalli Rajhara and are investigating the matter,8221; the SP added.

The 36-year-old officer was posted with the Special Branch of the district police. Thakur had served in Naxalite-affected areas for a majority of his about 15-year-long service. 8220;The officer was first posted in the Maoist-affected Sarguja district and was later shifted to Dantewara, another extremist affected district,8221; said a senior officer.

The police sources said flawed posting policy of the Chhattisgarh Police can be one of the reasons behind the suicide.

8220;The Government should try and formulate a transfer policy wherein an officer serves in a troubled area for a fixed tenure and is given the next posting in a non-trouble area,8221; a source said.

This is not the first case where a senior police officer has committed suicide while on duty. In 1992, a 1984 batch Indian Police Service officer Alok Tandon shot himself to death from his AK-47 rifle in Bastar, after he was reportedly denied leave.
