CHENNAI, FEBRUARY 17: Tension prevailed in front of the Chintadripet police station here this morning, following the death of a 37-year-old man in custody.
City Police Commissioner P Kalimuthu told newsmen that six police personnel, Inspector Balasubramaniam, Sub-Inspector Abdul Jaffar, three head constables and a constable, had been placed under suspension.
An RDO inquiry had been ordered into the incident and action would be taken on the basis of the probe, he added.
Kalimuthu said the victim, Nathan, was arrested in connection with the theft of Rs three lakh from an electronic goods shop in the city on February 9. Police had recovered Rs 30,500 from Nathan’s wife and another woman who was their neighbour.
Nathan was remanded after interrogation and brought to the police station yesterday. He was rushed to the Government General Hospital following acute vomiting and was pronounced dead by the doctors at the hospital.
