In the first protest of its kind, the BJP and its allies in the NDA on Thursday formed a human chain in the Parliament complex against the spiraling prices of essential commodities.
BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal, BJD, JDU and Shiv Sena members marched hand-in-hand shouting slogans against the Government, asking it to control the rising prices or demit office.
8220;From the official statements so far, the Government has shown its helplessness in controlling rising prices and a complete lack of accountability on the issue. The UPA Government will have to pay heavily for this,8221; Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani told the MPs after the march. The MPs later marched into both the Houses of Parliament and forced an adjournment for two hours.
8220;The Government should either contain inflation or quit office. We are willing to go to polls,8221; Advani remarked on a day his party released its manifesto for the upcoming elections to the Karnataka Assembly. The human chain was part of a series of agitations being carried out by NDA partners all over the country over the issue of price rise.
Advani said the Government was content with blaming the Opposition and high prices in the international markets for the inflation in the country and was hardly making any efforts from its side to provide relief to the poor. 8220;There is no problem that this country cannot solve through collective wisdom. But there have to be steps initiated in the right direction,8221; he said.
Drawing a parallel with the Emergency, Advani said price rise had put foodgrain beyond the reach of the common man and was akin to the denial of the right to life through the suspension of Article 21 during the Emergency. 8220;The right of food is part of the right to live. It is the responsibility of the Government to provide food to its people at affordable prices,8221; he said, adding that this would surely result in disastrous performance by 0the Congress in the Karnataka elections.
