Coming as relief for the residents of Pathankot, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation and Deputy Commissioner, Pathankot, to remove all encroachments and ensure that the roads were not clogged due to them.

The directions were passed on a public interest litigation PIL filed by a few residents of Pathankot. The petitioners had sought directions towards the removal of encroachments along the roads and pavements. The petitioners had alleged that several shopkeepers had encroached on the government land resulting in the congestion of roads.

After High Court8217;s intervention, the MC authorities had removed the encroachments and demolished the shops which had encroached on the government land. The petition on Thursday came up for resumed hearing and the status reports of the demolitions were produced before the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur and Justice Jasbir Singh. The Court has directed the authorities to remove the encroachments and rehabilitate those whose shops have been demolished.
