Apropos of the lead article, ‘Intelligence demands distance’ (IE, March 9), it’s time to wind up the IAS and IPS services as these are seen as totally corrupt, anti-citizen and more criminalised than politicians. I have observed that once they are sworn in as ministers, the politician enters into a conspiracy with bureaucrats to defraud the state. Now these officers are a law unto themselves and the public has lost trust in them.

The general’s ways

General Pervez Musharraf has a penchant for theatrics, which was clearly noticeable during the Kathmandu SAARC summit (when he rose from his seat to shake Vajpayee’s hand). He has thrown his latest “googly” at India by inviting himself here to watch Indo-Pak cricket. Once here, he will again attempt to woo the Indian press, as he had tried to do at Agra. As a patriotic Indian, I appeal to the media to put Musharraf in his place.

A suggestion

Why should BJP appeal to Ram Vilas Paswan to form the government? Why should it not nominate its own Muslim candidate for the CM’s post and ask for the others to support him? This will help its image. BJP is a nationalist party and there is no lack of Muslim nationalists.

Piloting Rahul

Apropos of the report, ‘Amethi captain by his side, Rahul meets Praful to raise pilot issues’ (IE, March 9), it is proof of what a system of inheriting political leadership brings with it. Even while the people of Amethi have found food, education and roads the hardest to come by, Rahul Gandhi shows where his priorities lie by espousing the cause of overfed, indisciplined, blackmailing, overpaid pilots.

Rescue Bihar

After 15 dark years, the people of Bihar are now free from the jungle raj of Laloo Prasad Yadav (‘A break from Laloo’, IE, March 8). Laloo, who took great pride in his lantern and lathi is now finding that the lantern is broken and the lathi is not oiled. It’s time to attend to the needs of the large number of poor people in Bihar. President’s rule should continue for at least two years to bring the situation to normalcy.

— Md. Mudassir Alam Aligarh

Apropos of ‘A break from Laloo’, it was certainly not the case that the Bihar governor Buta Singh was a fair player but that his masters in Delhi, scared of manipulating the governor’s office after the Jharkhand embarrassment, did not dare to install Laloo Prasad Yadav the way they installed Shibu Soren.

The EC way

Sushma Swaraj has made honest confession about male-domination in her own party BJP. The best remedy is to implement the suggestions of the Election Commission and make it compulsory for recognised political parties to give at least one-third of party tickets to women.

Divine Balaji

Balaji has done an excellent work for India against Pakistan by taking five wickets (‘My rhythm is back’, IE, March 9). Congratulations to him and we hope that he will prove India’s best bowler in times to come!
