The robbery case at Nirala Nagar on September 2 has turned out to be an embarrassment for the Hasanganj police.

On September 17, the police had arrested one Abdul Rahim alias Chand on charges of assault and robbery, which occurred in the house of a businesswoman, Ritushri. After the arrest, the police had claimed to have cracked the case.

This turned out to be a false claim with the recovery of Ritushri8217;s laptop on Saturday from Harishanker alias Anna, who was arrested in connection to the robbery and murder of a city jeweller8217;s wife.

On questioning, Harishanker admitted that he had also carried out the crime at Ritushri8217;s place.

This confession clearly indicates that Chand had been framed, as none of the items missing from Ritushri8217;s house was found with Chand.

According to the police, the robbery at Ritushri8217;s house was carried out by 8220;four or five people8221;, none of whom were found even after Chand8217;s arrest.

The police had also claimed that Chand was arrested on the basis of his confession and was sent to the jail for six days before he got a bail.

Harishankar was arrested by the Thakurganj police in connection with the robbery and murder of Usha Rani, wife of prominent jeweller Om Prakash, at her Kudiyaghat residencenbsp;on November 5.

8220;In course of the investigation, we came across certain evidence relating to the Nirala Nagar case. We found that the same people were involved in both the crimes,8221; said Vinay Chandra, Circle Officer CO of Chowk.

8220;We have recovered the laptop that was robbed from Ritushri8217;s house, while the other items that the accused took from there have been sold by them,8221; added Chandra.

Harishanker repeatedly said that he along with his five accomplices 8212; Raju, Ramnath, Ramkhelawan, Balendera, and Premnath 8212; had committed the robbery at Ritushri8217;s place.

8220;Premnath, who was killed in a police encounter immediately after the murder of the jeweller8217;s wife, had hit Ritushri with a country-made pistol. We have recovered the pistol,8221; said Chandra.

To cover up the glaring mistake, the Hasanganj police has come out with an interesting explanation.

Rahul Srivastava, COnbsp;of Mahanagar, said: 8220;Since Chand confessed that he was present in the house at the time of the incident and hit the woman before fleeing, we booked him under Section 308 8212; attempt to injure a person, which can cause death.8221;

Interestingly, Srivastava said they were suspicious about Chand8217;s confession, and had moved an application for his narco-analysis test. 8220;This is why we did not file a chargesheet against him.8221;
