Within weeks of the passing of the anti-conversion ordinance in Tamil Nadu, police in Theni district in the state received two complaints against Christians. But police have concluded that there is no basis for the complaint in either case and do not intend initiating any action against those involved. So much so that not even an FIR has been registered in the two cases.
First, Sivan Seyal 55 of Vengala Nagar, near here, lodged a complaint with the Allinagaram police, objecting to a church that was coming up near his place at the instance of pastor Paul Manickam.
Seyal said in his complaint that the pastor was constructing the church without any permission, as well as alluring the public of Vengala Nagar to convert to Christianity, promising them that he would get them loans and also bring in basic amenities to the colony.
Another complaint was from Class X student Jayakumar that his headmistress, Boopathy, was trying to convert him to Christianity. She had even threatened to hold back the admit card if he did not heed her advice, he had said in his complaint.
Police said the complaints were 8216;8216;motivated8217;8217;. While pastor Paul Manickam began building a church on government land classified 8220;Harijan Natham8221; land only for Dalits, construction had been stopped following police intervention.
In the case of the student8217;s complaint, it was found that 8216;8216;vested interests8217;8217; were using Jayakumar to nail a good teacher who helped the school to achieve 100 per cent results in the Class X public examination for the past three years.
