A city court today convicted five Kolkata Police constables for the killing of traffic sergeant Bapi Sen, who had protested against their harassment of a woman on New Year8217;s eve in 2002.

Justice Basudev Majumder observed that 8216;8216;the prosecution has successfully proved the charges against the accused8217;8217; even in the absence of the woman who had been molested. The sentence will be pronounced tomorrow.

The five accused 8212; Madhusudhan Chakraborty, Piyush Goswami, Sridam Bauri, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sekhar Bhusan Mitra of the Calcutta Reserve Police 8212; have been charged under Section 302 murder and other sections of the IPC.

The accused blamed the media hype involving the case for their plight. 8216;8216;We are innocent. It was the media which is responsible for our misfortune,8217;8217; one of them said.

Sen8217;s family, however, expressed satisfaction over the verdict. 8216;8216;We want them to get exemplary punishment. We know we will not get Bapi back but, at least, we believe it is this kind of verdict which will prevent other people from committing such heinous crime,8217;8217; said Mitra, Sen8217;s sister-in-law.

Incidentally, the woman who had been attacked, never came forward to testify. The judge said that the prosecution had tried its best to secure the attendance of the woman and the man she was riding with on a bike and that even the Police Commissioner had put out a notice in newspapers for them.
