A constable was mowed down by a truck at the Strand Road-Mahatma Gandhi Road crossing on Thursday morning.

Debasish Roy, the 42-year-old Kolkata Traffic police constable, was crossing the road when the truck AP 16 T W 5397 hit him.

Roy was rushed to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

According to locals, Roy tried to stop the truck and demanded a bribe from the driver.

The police have, however, refuted the claims saying that the constable was trying to stop the truck from entering Posta because it was already overcrowded with lorries.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver fled from the spot after the incident. Later, the truck was seized by the Burrabazar police.
