OCTOBER 29: A 34-year-old conman, who was lodged in the Crime Branch lock up hung himself from a window railing this morning.Investigations have revealed that Sunil Malkar hung himself with his shirt from the railing of the prison cell. He had been arrested by an officer of the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch on October 16 for cheating some 600 people to the tune of Rs 12 crores. He had been remanded to police custody till November 1 next month.The deputy Collector of Mumbai district visited the spot after the incident and the body was later sent for post mortem.This is the second custodial death in the last one week. Veluswamy Natrajan Nadar was allegedly tortured by the Worli police while being interrogated in connection with a theft which resulted in his death at a city hospital on October 22.A post mortem revealed that his brain was missing and there were multiple injuries on his wrist, neck, elbow, arms and feet. The injuries on his neck were feared to have been caused by him beinghung through a tyre, Swamy has alleged.
