Seeking to turn the heat on new Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the Congress on Wednesday demanded that the disproportionate assets case against him and his family members be either transferred outside the state or he step down from office.

The special court trying the case had recently ordered the framing of charges against Badal, his wife Surinder Kaur, son Sukhbir Singh Badal and others.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, “It will be a subversion of justice if the principle accused is himself the top man in the government under whom the prosecuting agency is functioning.” While maintaining that justice must be actually done and seen to have been done, he asked: “How is it possible for any agency to investigate and prosecute a person who is the head of the government?”
