JALANDHAR, Sept 29: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Jagmeet Singh Brar today said that the Congress was making all-out efforts to forge a secular front for the coming by-elections in Adampur constituency involving Communist Party of India, Communist Party Marxist and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Talking to reporters here, Brar said he had talked to Bahujan Samaj Party president Kanshi Ram last week about forging an alliance of secular forces to give a tough fight to the “communal” alliance of the Akali and Bharatiya Janata Party in the constituency.

Asked if the Congress would be open to a proposal of other alliance partners putting up a candidate, Brar said it was for the Congress high command to direct. “The PPCC view is that the Congress candidate deserves to be put up for the election,” he added.

Alleging widespread corruption in the state government, Brar said the party was collecting evidence of corruption in the government and would shortly come up with a comprehensive list.

He said the PPCC was also fully supportive of the demand of the people of Udham Singh Nagar for non-inclusion in the proposed state of Uttaranchal. Brar described the Akali stand on the issue as “dubious”.

He said it took the Chief Minister six months to convey the stand of the Akali party to the BJP central leadership which showed their “disinterest” in the issue.
