Congress candidate Francisco Sardinha swept the Mormugao bypoll on Saturday. He defeated BJP candidate Wilfred Mesquita by a margin of 40,902 votes...

Congress candidate Francisco Sardinha swept the Mormugao South Goa bypoll on Saturday. He defeated BJP candidate Wilfred Mesquita by a margin of 40,902 votes even though only 35 per cent turned out for the election held on October 31. The BJP had imported Mesquita from Churchill Alemao8217;s Save Goa Front at the last minute. Though Alemao had declared his party8217;s support to the Congress, his rank and file supported the BJP.
