The Pune Municipal Corporation PMC is moving towards making the weaker sections of the city computer literate under the Sharad Mobile Computer Training Scheme, named in honour of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, as the civic body has recently purchased six buses from Tata Motors at Rs 20 lakh each. The buses are currently parked at the premises of the civic fire brigade office in Lohiya Nagar.

The standing committee had proposed the scheme in 2007 annual budget. It had made a provision of Rs two crore for computer training for citizens. The scheme will be implemented on pilot basis in the wards of mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairman, Leader of House and Leader of Opposition.

8220;We have purchased six buses from Tata Motors and each bus will have 14 computers. Each computer will be used for teaching two people at a time, which means 28 people could use these computers. Even though the computers will run for eight hours at a time, we are going to provide computer back up and the computers could be charged using the plugs,8221; said Ashok Kalamkar, in-charge of urban community development

UCD department of PMC.

He said, 8220;The scheme is meant for spreading computer literacy among the weaker sections of the society and will be open for people of all ages. Now, we are looking for instructors who could impart basic computer training to beginners, which we will finalise soon,8221; said Kalamkar.

8220;We have intentionally kept the buses at the fire brigade office premises for the time being as they might receive any dents. Besides, the work of fixing computers in them is currently being carried out,8221; another civic official said.
