NEW DELHI, JANUARY 24: Paramilitary troops, including crack commandos, and police personnel have taken positions across the Capital in the backdrop of the recovery of an explosive device near the venue of the Republic Day parade and intelligence inputs about a possible terrorist attack.

"We are making unprecedented arrangements on an elaboratescale for various functions connected with the Republic Day celebrations. Over 55,000 personnel have been put on high alert and we are being assisted by about 1,000 personnel from para-military forces including crack commandos," Delhi police spokesman Ravi Pawar said.

Police have intensified patrolling and checking at borders, railway stations, bus stands, market places, guest houses and beefed up security at airports, besides deploying bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs, he said.

These arrangements, he said, have been drawn up in thebackground of intelligence inputs from various agencies "pointing to the sinister designs of Pakistan-supported terrorists, fundamentalists and underworld gangs to cause disturbance and harm the VIPs and high dignitaries," Pawar said.
