CAIRO, FEBRUARY 16: An outstanding 30th minute goal by winger Prabhjot Singh enabled India Colts beat Switzerland 1-0 in the 2nd Akhbar Al Yom International Hockey Tournament here on Tuesday.

The Indian juniors, who lost their first match, took about 10 minutes to settle down in their second outing. They were at the receiving end as Switzerland conducted repeated raids and earned five penalty corners in this short duration.

However, Indian goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan was again in total control and warded off all attempts.

Thereafter the Indian Colts got their act together and essayed many forays into the rival defence. The forwards were well supported by the midfielders.

Skipper Bimal Lakra along with half-backs Tirkey and Shamsu Zott constantly set up wingers Prabhjot and Arjun Halappa who thrilled with their electric side runs and superb ball control. Striker Gurjani Singh also excelled in his dodges.

India should have taken the lead in the 25th minute after Gurjant and Prabhjot combined with lighting speed passing down the middle. However, Gurjant’s weak hit was easily staffed by Switzerland goalkeeper Roger Thoma.

However, they did not have to wait much longer to draw first blood. Five minutes later, right back Len Ayappa scooped a long ball to Bipin Fernandes who set up Prabhjot near the circle. The Indian winger forged through two Swiss defenders and after side stepping past the onrushing custodian, shot home with a crisp reverse (1-0).

India could have increased their tally immediately upon resumption, but Gurjant’s hit went straight to Thoma. India countinued to mount attacks and though they were in complete control, the young forwards could not get space in the crowded Swiss circle.

Seven minutes from the end, inside forward Tejbir Singh was harshly penalised and shown the red card for wildly swinging his stick without being in ball possession.

Indian Colts, down to 1O players till the end, successflly thwarted the Swiss efforts for the equaliser including a last second penalty corner which Chauhan palmed over the crosspeice.

India will now play hosts Egypt on Thursday.
