College staff launch protest stir

VADODARA, Aug 5: Teaching and non-teaching staff members of the Adivasi Arts and Commerce College at Santrampur, Dahod district, launched a three-day strike on Thursday to protest against the assault on college principal Ismail Dawoodbhai Patel earlier this week.

No arrests have been made in the case, though Patel, in his FIR, said he suspected the involvement of a local politician in the incident.

Three youths had barged into the classroom where the principal was teaching on Tuesday, assaulted him with the butt of a countrymade revolver, fired into the ceiling and fled after threatening Patel with dire consequences if he did not resign. With District Superintendent of Police K L N Rao away in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, in connection with the a arrangements for the Lok Sabha elections, PSI R M Rathod is investigating the case.

Police sources said the incident was the fallout of groupism in the college8217;s management committee, which is dominated by supporters of Congress MP Somji Damor.
