Cool PoolThe battle has begun and top pool players of the city are fighting it out at the The Pepsi Cool Pool Clash at Riverview. The tournament, which got underway on July 15 at 12 of the coolest pool joints in the city, is being played in two categories - singles and mixed doubles. 40 participants clash at the final showdown, starting July 23 from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 to 9 pm And what do the winners hope to gain at the end of the day? Mega prizes, of course. The first prize is a return ticket for two to Dubai. Other prizes include tickets to Goa and dinner coupons. What's more, groovy prizes are offered for just watching and guessing the winner in any of the matches. So be at Riverview on July 23, 24 and 26, as participant or voyeur!Jolly good showEverybody came together for a good cause - the officers, the JCOs and all other ranks - to make the blood donation drive at the College of Military Engineering a success. Conducted at the CME on July 19 by the Armed Forces Medical College, Colonel Thot of the blood transfusion department of Southern Command and Lieutenant Colonel R I Singh of CME co-ordinated the organisation. The blood will be supplied to military hospitals and even to civil hospitals, if need be. Another up for CME's social consciousness.Give peace a chancePeace is your best weapon - to cultivate such an awareness in today's youngsters is one major step in ensuring a strife-free tomorrow. What better occasion to actually make our young citizens think on this line than the anniversary of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombing? Beginning August 2, a week-long schedule has been drawn up by the Anubhav Shiksha Kendra to mark the holocaust called `From Development to Destruction'. Starting with an essay and poster competition (jointly organised by Anubhav and Meljol Hum Bacchon Ka - an initiative of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences) for children at the Balgandharva Rangmandir, it also includes street plays and singing competitions, film screenings and a peace day fair. White, indeed, ought to be the colour of the week!Boo nightIt wasn't Friday the 13th last week, and it isn't Friday the 13th this week either! But that hasn't deterred the people at Totem Pole, who organised a Horror Night last week, or Black Cadillac who's gearing up to scare the wits out of you this Friday night. With DJ Rafsy selecting the right tracks, sets that promise to send shivers down your spine (get ready for skeletons in any closet you may see!), cries of owls and howls of wolves in the background, make sure you aren't alone!Young at artHe may be 89 years old but Darab Madan's enthusiasm has certainly not dimmed. A retired textile mill employee, Madan had always been interested in drawing. Despite a recent eye operation he persisted in his hobby and even held an exhibition of his drawing at the Tilak Smarak Mandir. Madan is also an avid acrostics fan and interested in music. Guess it's never too late for art, huh?
