
Hope for a cause
Cerebral palsy is a disease commonly seen in children, who are known as spastics. In the medical field, most shy away from tackling the situation because it8217;s a no-win situation. 8220;Spastics are incurable. But their condition can be improved through surgery,8221; explains Dr Sharad Hardikar, founder, Hardikar Hospital, 8220;The deformities in muscle co-ordination can be minimised such that the child can be made to walk and function independently. We have started a full-fledged surgical centre devoted only to spastics, which is looked after by Dr S Prakash who learnt the latest techniques from Japan. We are raising funds for a Centre for Rehabilitation of Spastic Children, which is a plan for the future, since the treatment process is long.8221;
As a fund-raiser, the Hardikar Hospital has organised a classical vocal recital by Shobha Gurtu, queen of thumri gayaki. The concert is scheduled for Sunday November 28, 8.30 p.m. at the foot of the famous Chaturshrungi Temple, and entry is free. The event also coincides with the silver jubilee of the hospital.
All about Jhatkas
It8217;s a people participation of a different kind. No, people here do not participate in the government8217;s decision making process, but in a marketing gimmick that helps ensure greater sales. Pepsi organised a Mirinda Jor Ka Jhatka contest where people were invited to complete the sentence Mujhko Laga Jhatka No.1 jab8230; People obviously were thrilled with this jhatka for the organisers received 450 entries in just four hours. The prize No.1 went to Anil Achutam whose answer was main piyunga Mirinda aur bill bharega Govinda. Rucha Ingle, Sai Prasad and Raunak won the second, third and fourth prizes respectively.
Show behind bars
The much talked about show tenders turned up at the Barman8217;s Night at Pegasus just half an hour late. Till then, the DJs Prashant Shetty and Zubair had got the crowd off to a good start with an excellent mix of old and new numbers and remixes. Show tender Tolley was simply amazing with his bottle juggling and balancing. He started off with an excellent performance of bottle juggling and balancing and then went on to juggling glasses as well. His cocktail mixes had the crowd amazed and wanting more. Just when we thought that he had done his best, Tolley stood on his hands on the bar and poured a drink out of a glass attached to his belt.
Tolley can not only make cocktails and mocktails, he also can drink them. A person who was interacting well with the crowd, he made the drinks according their demand as well. The main sponsor of the event was Bacardi. Excellent music and bartending were definitely the great part of the party.
Blast from the past
Come Saturday and old film music lovers can hope for a treat for their ears. At Tilak Smarak Mandir from 5p.m. for three hours Nobina Mirjankar, an accomplished singer who was also the winner at the Sa Re Ga Ma contest. She has also sung the playback for the film Sarkarnama. The male singer is Kishore Kulkarni, winner of Meri Awaz Suno will sing popular songs composed by the grand old men of yesteryears, S.D. Burman, Anil Biswas, Hemant Kumar, Sajjad Hussein, C Ramchandra and more. What8217;s more is that Anil Biswas, the music director will be gracing the occasion incidentally his first visit to the city. This is also the first of the series of such events, the next one being held in January 2000. The reason this event is being organised by Milind Kulkarni of OM AMJ is to help revive film music of the yesteryears.
With the singers of the future, this should be easy. Celebration timeAs part of 50 years of Marathi theatre, the Shiledar family and Aadkar foundation bring a programme in celebration. The three members of the Shiledar family who have held on to a strong tradition over the years, Jaymala, Kirti and Lata Shiledar will be conferred will be interviewed by Sudhir Gadgil.
The Aadkar Foundation is also being inaugurated on this occasion by Ashok Khot, commissioner, ESIC. The chief guests include Madhavrao Sangle, the additional commissioner, PMC and Maheshgauri, upper police commissioner. The programme will be conducted on 27the November at the Garware college hall, beginning at 6 p.m.
