
Remembering a revolutionary
“A 100 years ago the revolutionary leader Veer Savarkar then a young man took an oath to fight for freedom through revolutionary means. We would like the youngsters of today to remember this fact,” says Himani Savarkar, a member of the Savarkar Smriti Vyakhyanmala Samiti. The organisation plans to commemorate the event through a three-day programme starting on Friday. The programme will feature a play reading by Charudatta Aphale and his group. Important episodes from the three plays penned by Savarkar will be e read at the Bharat Natya Mandir on Friday at 9.30 pm.
Sagara Pran Talmalalaa programme featuring the revolutionary verse of the leader will be held on Saturday at 9.30 pm at the same venue. On the concluding day Professor S.N. Navalgundkar will deliver a lecture on Savarkar followed by a prize distribution ceremony for essays written by students on various aspects related to Savarkar. “We would like the generation of today to know the various facets of a versatile man,” says Himani Savarkar about the aim behind the effort.
Party time
Parties are no longer small informal dos where you get invited if you know the host. Here’s one organised by Bacardi and Venky’s which will take place on May 8 called the Akbar Sami Bacardi Blast. Now since the host cannot call or write, all one has to do to get invited to this bash is to visit places like Jaws, First Track Go-Kart Racing, Havana, Downtown and some of the pubs in the next couple of days, where the promoters will be dishing out the invitations. Akbar of the Jalwa and Jadoo fame will also play rock and roll, disco and other current hits to keep the dancing shoes tapping.
Nostalgic numbers It has been a year since that silken voice fell still yet singer Talat Mehmood continues to cast his spell over his fans. Survihar, a city-based organisation will mark the singer’s first death anniversary by holding an audio-visual programme in his honour this Sunday. Says Dr. Prakash Kamat of the organisation, “There will be two parts to the programme. The visual section will feature clips of songs from those films like Sone ki chidiya and Ek gaon ki kahani in which Talat Mehmood starred as a hero. While the second will have some of the rarer film-based songs sung by Mehmood as a playback singer, like tum juda hokar which was not included in the film Jahanara. The programme will be held at the Amphitheatre, Fergusson College at 6.30 pm on Sunday.
Marching ahead
The armed forces is now an attractive career option for women. For those have always wanted to don the uniform but did not know how here’s news. The Nandini Career Academy has organised a one-day career guidance camp for young women below age of 25 (if graduate) and below the age of 27 (if post-graduate). “Through the camp we plan to impart guidance on how to go about the entrance examinations with even a mock examination,” says Nandini Natu of the academy. The camp is scheduled to be held at the Sumitra Sadan on Fergusson college road on May 16 between 10.30 am and 1.30 p.m.
