
The BJP corporator Shailaja Girkar has organised a road race from ward 141 at Kandivli to celebrate India’s 50 years of independence. About 3000 persons are expected to take part in ten different age groups.
All participants will be taking an oath to promote unity, equality, literacy, cleanliness and brotherhood, said a release here. Cash prizes of Rs 25,000 shall be awarded to the first six winners in each group. The event will also have some national level sportsmen participating in the event.
Symposium
The BJP has organised a symposium to discuss various problems affecting Mumbai on August 7 at Indian Merchants’ Chamber between 1 pm and 4 pm. The party national general secretary Pramod Mahajan and deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde will inaugurate the symposium and MLA Kirit Somaiya will preside. Discussions will be held on water supply, electricity, transport problems, roads, repair of old buildings, problems of MHADA housing colonies, slum re-development scheme.
Protest morcha
Residents of Mumbra staged a dharna-cum-morcha outside the Mumbra station master’s office on Monday at 8 am to protest against the change in local train timings by the Central Railway. While the platform is meant for a 12-car rake, there is not a single 12-car rake in the morning or evening peak hours they complain. They said the increase in the number of Up trains originating from Thane for CST has caused immense inconvenience to people of Kalwa and Mumbra.
I-day fete
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Mumbai Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Samiti in association with Yusuf Meherali Centre and Freedom Fighters Sabha will celebrate the 50th year of India’s independence on August 8 at 6 pm at the Bhavan’s auditorium. Sharada Sangeet Vidyalaya, is organising an open competition in Indian classical vocal instruments, percussion (both Hindustani and Carnatic style), Bharat Natyam, Kathak and Odissi. The competition will be held in three age groups from August 15-17 and August 22-24 from 9 am. A Pandit V D Paluskar award will be awarded in each group and category to the winners.
